Death Doula Life Update: New Beginnings and Offerings

Hello!

Surprise! You thought I was only focused on my degree, didn’t you? Well, today marks a huge milestone for me—I’m submitting my final assessment for my psychology degree when I get home from my night shift! 🎉 This journey has been looooong. Filled with tears, anger, frustration, late nights - and a few borderline fails. I’ve missed out on countless coffee dates and family moments, but I’m SO proud to say that it’s finally done!

I am now ready to take a step back from academia - and for the next 12 months put the breaks on that bit. I want to dive headfirst into what I truly love—serving as an end-of-life doula, funeral celebrant, and pet death doula, and looking after this community I care about.💖

When I wasn't doing university work, I needed an outlet and a break. Normal people would not take up another course - but clearly I am a raging lunatic. So, with immense happiness....

I’m beyond excited to announce a new venture and service offering: women’s circles with a twist, focusing on death, loss, and grief - thanks to the amazing training of Rachael Rose (https://rachaelrose.com.au/).

So, what are Women’s circles?

So, what are women’s circles, you ask? They’re intimate gatherings where we share our experiences, support one another, and foster connections. Think of it as a safe space for heartfelt discussions, storytelling, and just being ourselves.

So, what are bereavement groups?

And let’s not forget about bereavement groups! These focus specifically on the experiences of loss and grief, providing support for those navigating the difficult terrain of losing a loved one - from months to years after (because as we know, loss and grief can be life long).

My twist - a mixture of both

My circles will blend the essence of both women’s circles and bereavement groups—creating an environment where we can talk, reminisce, and find solace in shared experiences of loss and grief. Finding a safe space to share stories, discuss thoughts on death and dying, and celebrate our lost loved ones together.

Expect practical elements: talking openly about grief, sharing photos, stories and memories, and exploring what it means to navigate loss in our lives. For me, it is all about authenticity—these circles will be a space where you can express your feelings without judgement, all while enjoying good food and warm drinks. There will be laughter, tears, and genuine connection—everything that makes us human.

I feel ready to embark on this. With my soon-to-be-finished psychology degree, over 10 years in palliative care nursing, many, many conversations with people surrounding loss, death and grief - and my experience helping families celebrate their loved ones’ lives, I am inspired to facilitate these circles. But... I need to call in a MASSIVE favour beforehand - and I hope that some amazing women can help me out.

I Want You... pretty pretty please!

Now, here’s where I need your help....desperately! I’m looking for a few wonderful women to join me for a “test” circle in the next month or two (about eight ish in total). It will be a cosy gathering lasting about two hours, where we can explore the energy and format of these circles together - and one in which I ask for feedback as much as you are willing to give. The food and drinks are on me!

All I ask is that you feel comfortable discussing your thoughts about death, dying, and lost loved ones, as well as anything you feel you missed / needed when your loved one died and what you would like in a circle —share as much or as little as you’d like, no pressure at all.

Also, I want to mention that during my official circles when they go live - there will be no photography of Women to preserve the intimacy of our discussions surrounding some pretty heavy, intense subjects. However, I’d love to capture the spirit of our test gathering, so I’m asking for permission to take a few photos (hence a test day) - photos that I can then use on social media. Call me or message me If you may be interested!

Lets have a hot date (the "hot" being my hot flushes).

I am so, so looking forward to being able to reconnect with all of you, especially those I’ve missed during my study time! There have been many coffee dates I have missed out on - and many things I have had to say no to doing.

Message or call me anytime—the next coffee date is on me, I promise! ☕️

Thank you for being part of this journey. I truly, truly mean that. I am so excited to see where this path leads.

With love and immense gratitude, Kara ❤️
